I truly enjoy teaching other medical professionals about the advanced methods I've developed in the fight against skin cancer and acne scars. When I'm not writing book chapters or scientific articles, you can find me traveling to conferences where I share my knowledge to help promote the advancement of dermatology.
I have never seen such beautiful sunsets as I have while riding an ATV across this heavenly place. In addition, scuba diving is a passion that I cannot live without. My favorite diving is the treacherous Blue Hole in Belize and I hope to dive the Red Sea next!

Frequently Asked Questions
Learn about Dr. Salar Hazany, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon specializing in skin cancer treatment and cosmetic dermatology.
What makes a Mohs surgeon different from a general dermatologist?
A Mohs surgeon is a dermatologist who has completed an additional fellowship year focused specifically on Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic surgery. This specialized training involves learning advanced surgical techniques, histopathology, and reconstruction methods that general dermatologists don't receive. Mohs surgeons are trained to serve as both surgeon and pathologist, examining tissue samples in real-time during the procedure. Dr. Salar Hazany completed his Mohs fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital under world-renowned dermatologic surgeons. This specialized expertise is particularly valuable for complex skin cancers, cancers in cosmetically sensitive areas, or cases where maximum tissue preservation is important. Choosing a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon like Dr. Hazany ensures you receive the highest level of surgical expertise and the best possible outcomes.
How does completing a medical school, residency, and fellowship prepare a dermatologist?
Medical school provides foundational knowledge of the human body, diseases, and treatment principles over four years. A dermatology residency follows, requiring three to four additional years of specialized training in diagnosing and treating skin conditions under experienced faculty supervision. A fellowship, like Mohs surgery training, represents another one to two years of ultra-specialized training in a particular subspecialty. This rigorous progression creates dermatologists with extensive knowledge and practical experience. Dr. Hazany's educational path—including UCLA medical school, Harbor-UCLA residency as Chief Resident, and a fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital—provided comprehensive training in both medical and surgical dermatology. The combination of general dermatology training plus fellowship specialization means surgeons like Dr. Hazany can handle both routine and highly complex cases with exceptional expertise and judgment.
What are common misconceptions about cosmetic dermatology?
One common misconception is that cosmetic procedures are purely about vanity, when in fact they improve self-confidence and quality of life. Another misconception is that results look fake or overdone; skilled cosmetic dermatologists like those at Hazany Derm prioritize natural-looking results that enhance your existing features. Many people assume cosmetic procedures are only for aging skin, but they address concerns across all ages and skin types. Some worry that cosmetic treatments hurt or have long downtime, but modern procedures often have minimal discomfort and recovery. There's also a misconception that cosmetic and medical dermatology are separate; actually, they're complementary disciplines. Dr. Hazany combines both approaches, treating underlying skin health while achieving aesthetic goals. Understanding these facts helps patients make informed decisions about their skin care.
Why should I choose a dermatologist over other providers for skin cancer removal?
Dermatologists have specialized training in recognizing skin cancer, determining the best treatment approach, and executing procedures while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. A fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon like Dr. Salar Hazany has even more advanced expertise in complex skin cancer cases. Dermatologists understand that successful skin cancer treatment requires not just removing the cancer but also achieving the best cosmetic outcome, especially on the face. General practitioners or non-dermatologists may lack the specialized knowledge and equipment needed for optimal results. Dermatologists can accurately determine cancer margins, handle unexpected complications, and make sophisticated reconstruction decisions. Choosing a dermatologist—particularly a Mohs-trained surgeon—means you're getting the gold standard for skin cancer treatment with the highest cure rates and the best cosmetic results.
How does a dermatologist approach treating acne differently than other doctors?
Dermatologists understand that acne isn't just a surface problem but involves complex biological processes including sebum production, bacterial colonization, inflammation, and hormonal factors. They can determine the type and severity of acne and prescribe targeted treatments accordingly, from topical medications to oral antibiotics or hormonal therapies. Dermatologists stay current with the latest acne treatments and technologies, including laser therapies and procedural options. They understand acne in different patient populations, including those with darker skin tones who are at higher risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Dr. Hazany's specialized approach involves treating the underlying cause rather than just the symptoms, leading to lasting results. This deeper understanding of acne pathophysiology and access to a wider range of treatment options is what sets dermatologists apart and why they're the preferred specialists for significant acne.
What is the importance of innovation in dermatology?
Innovation in dermatology means developing new technologies, techniques, and treatment protocols that improve outcomes and patient satisfaction. Pioneering dermatologists like Dr. Hazany contribute to the field through research and by adopting new methods ahead of widespread adoption. Innovation allows dermatologists to treat conditions more effectively, with less downtime, better cosmetic results, and greater safety. The field is constantly evolving with new laser technologies, injectables, surgical techniques, and combination approaches. Patients benefit from access to cutting-edge treatments that simply weren't available years ago. Dermatologists who prioritize innovation, like the team at Hazany Derm, ensure their patients receive the most advanced care available. This commitment to staying at the forefront of dermatology distinguishes practices that truly excel in the field.
